IN AUSTRALIA, A PIG HAS NEVER BEEN SIMPLY A PIG

A very brief illustrated overview:

This might look like a domestic pig, but it is not...

...It is a wild pig [woodcut print, Illustrated Sydney News, 1876]

However, this is not a wild pig - it is a feral pig [see E.M. Pullar, 1953]

And while domestic pigs can become feral pigs, feral pigs can never become domestic pigs (or wild pigs) [comment in relation to 1986 court ruling]

Except in the EU, where they must be named and eaten as "Australian wild boar" and never as feral pig [as negotiated by Dept of Foreign affairs and trade in the 1990s]
